Happy New Year!

Happy New Year y’all! Did you stay up till Midnight last night? I did. I actually stayed up till about 2am…hey, it’s the Holidays. It’s cool. 😉

Today is awesome in so many ways.  But first – we can’t forget that not only is today the New Year (!!!!) it’s also a solemnity in the Church! The Solemnity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God.

What is this solemnity about? Celebrating how Awesome God is. He allowed Mary to become the mother of His only Son – Jesus Christ our savior.

Just take a closer look at the “Hail Mary” with me:

When we say “Hail Mary” we are praising her for the awesome things God has allowed to come through her.

When we say “Full of Grace” like the Angel Gabriel did, we are recognizing that God even let Mary be free from sin! She was full of Grace! So that she would be prepared to receive into her womb the King of Kings – the Second Person in the Holy Trinity – Jesus who is God.

When we say “The Lord is with thee” we realize that God is/was with Mary the whole time. He had set her apart from women, as we see in the next line:

“Blessed art thou among women!” She is the New Eve, chosen by God to bring our Savoir into the world. She is blessed! And we rightly call her so!

“Blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus” This is pretty obvious. The fruit of Mary’s womb is Jesus. 😉 We are calling Jesus Blessed, as His is.

When we say, “Holy Mary” we are glorifying Mary for how God has sanctified her and made her Holy!

“Mother of God” – this is simple. Mary is the Mother of Jesus. Jesus is God. Therefore Mary is the Mother of God!

“Pray for us sinners” Mary can pray for us. The saints in Heaven can pray for us. We are simply asking that Mary will intercede for us, pray for us, help us out.

“Now and at the hour of our death” we want the prayers of Mary now and until we die. Because Jesus gave Mary to us as our Mother when he was on the cross. I want my earthly mother to pray for me – just like I want my Heavenly Mother to pray for me.

Amen. I believe.

We honor Mary because God saw fit to honor her, and Jesus honored her here on Earth.

So that’s your religion lesson from me for today 😉

BUT before I move on, a couple quotes from the early Church Fathers on Mary:

“Even though Eve had Adam for a husband, she was still a virgin…. By disobeying, she became the cause of death for herself and for the whole human race. IN the same way, Mary, though she also had a husband, was still a virgin, and by obeying, she became the cause of salvation for herself and for the whole human race…. The knot of Eve’s disobedience was untied by Mary’s obedience. What eve bound through her unbelief, Mary loosed by her faith.” – St. Irenaeus of Lyons (born ~150 A.D.)

“Christ, being God, became man for our sake and was born of Mary, Mother of God, to free us from the devil’s power” – St. Athanasius (On Virginity 3 [Mid 300’s] )

“If anyone does not agree that Holy Mary is Mother of God, he is at odds with the Godhead.” [Letters to Cledonius the Priest 101 (A.D. 382)] – St. Gregory of Nazianz

Mary, Mother of God, pray for us.

 Now, onto other matters.

I found out something really neat today! One of the author groups I’m part of on Facebook posted a challenge today: Find the 2,015th word in your book.  So I looked up my 2,015th word. Guess what it is?

“Jesus”.

That’s awesome, isn’t it? A little sign, in my  mind, that I’m doing the right thing.

Guess what last year’s word was? “When”. And you know what most of last year was about? Wondering “When” this book would be done and published!

The year before that? “Now.” in 2013 I started writing this book. And my 2,013th word was “Now”.  The time for me to begin it was “Now”. How cool? 😀

God is so awesome! I love these little neat signs He leaves.

Also, I don’t know if you saw my facebook post or not – but two weekends ago I had the opportunity to talk about me and my book after all Masses at my parish.  After Mass, people had the opportunity to purchase the book as well. I sold out completely. We had 415 books on hand. Counting all the ones we found under seats in the car, in purses and bags, etc. Every single one of them was sold. That’s 415 people, at least, who will be able to learn something about their Faith through my words! That’s incredible!

It’s all through Him. God is allowing these awesome things to happen. I love it.

Only bad thing about running out of books is it takes almost 2 weeks to get more in stock! But that’s a good problem to have 😉 Very good problem.

I wish y’all a happy New Year. May it be filled with blessings, learning, Faith, hope, charity, and love. Keep God at your center and He’ll guide your way. I know it.  God is working amazing things.

Love y’all, praying for y’all! Please continue to keep me in your prayers as well. This New Year will bring lots of good things.

The Immaculate Conception

Today is the Feast of the Immaculate Conception.

What does that mean?

Today we celebrate the awesome power of God and how He saved Mary from being tarnished by the stain of sin so she could be made worthy to carry His Divine Son within her womb.

And this isn’t something new. I’ve been reading these books:

Awesome Reading about Mary

And

More Awesome Reading on Mary

They are so cool! Like it takes you through history and shows you what the Saints and Church Fathers wrote about our Blessed Mother! INCLUDING how most of them believed that she was free from sin.  It’s not a new belief we made up recently. It’s not something that was unheard of or shot down in the Church at any point.  It’s been a belief for thousands of years.

And that’s not all.  This belief of Mary being Immaculately Conceived is rooted in the Bible. Mary is the New Ark of the Covenant, read below to see what I mean:

“Also, could Jesus have been born from a sinful woman? No, I don’t think so. Mary is the new Ark of the Covenant.  In the Old Testament the Ark of the Covenant was a gilded chest, commissioned by God, to carry the staff of Aaron, a jar of Manna, and the stone blocks on which the Ten Commandments were written.  It was also the way God communicated with the people.  In a way, the Ark contained the Spirit of the Lord.  It was revered, shown reverence, and people celebrated it!

If you think back to the Old Testament, there is a story of King David going to retrieve the Ark of the Covenant.(2 Samuel 6) The actual wording is, he arose and went. Why is that important? Take a look at what St. Luke says in his Gospel: Mary arose and went to visit Elizabeth. When Mary arrived, Elizabeth was in awe and filled with joy; much like David when he stood before the Ark. Elizabeth’s baby (John the Baptist) leapt for joy in his mother’s womb. Guess what David did? He danced and praised God with excitement before the Ark. And finally, Luke adds that Mary stayed with Elizabeth for three months. The Ark was temporarily stationed in the “House of Obededom” for a waiting period of three months.

Add all these parallels together and it’s really clear that Mary is now assuming the role that was once the role of the Ark of the Covenant. Like that golden chest, she’s a sacred vessel where the Lord’s presence dwells with His people.  We revere and celebrate Mary because she is the new, pure Ark of the Covenant.  (This idea came from the Ignatius Study Bible, Biblical commentary by Schott Hahn and Curtis Mitch.)”

Now you know why we say Mary is without sin. 😉

If you want to learn more about Mary and what the Catholic Church believes, get those books I mentioned earlier and don’t forget to read about it in chapter 7 of my book – How to Become a Heroic Catholic.

Happy Friday!

Some exciting things have happened this week!  From a book launch party on Sunday, to reaching a major milestone in the realm of Facebook….things have been going well here at Heroic Catholic Central. 😉 All praise and glory to God! Seriously. He’s the one making any of this possible.
I reached OVER 100 likes on the Facebook Page (https://www.facebook.com/HowToBecomeAHeroicCatholic):

100

Y’all – I’m so excited about that! From Monday to Now I’ve had close to 50 new likes. This is amazing!

One awesome fan received her book as a Birthday Present, and shared this epic photo with me:

RebeccaHero
She couldn’t wait to get her hands on a copy!

A couple days later, she shared her thoughts on what she’s read so far: “On chapter five and I already love this book! IT’S AWESOME!”

Rebeccaheropage

And last, but not least, my parish’s bulletin for this week features an article that I have to say is pretty sweet.

“So often we hear complaints about teenagers, but here is one in our midst,
who is truly making a difference in life and in faith!”
(Read the full article here) http://stpatrickbr.org/shamrock/November_16,_2014.pdf
Having the prayers, love, and support from my home parish means a lot to me.  I’ve grown up in St. Patrick parish, I teach 8th grade religion there, help out with the (amazing and beautiful) Children’s Choir…it’s a home to me.

I love it.

Our God is an Awesome God. One who knows our needs, and gives to us the strength and joy to do as He asks.  Every night I give to Him all that I am, all that I have, all I can offer. In return – He blesses His servant and grants peace and joy in the heart of His child.  Thanks be to God. Alleluia. Yes, I believe. Amen.

Happy All Saints Day!

Today is the Solemnity of All Saints. It’s a Holy Day of Obligation usually – this year, due to it falling on a Saturday, it is not a Holy Day of Obligation – however it is still a Holy Day and special.

But why on earth do we have a whole day dedicated to the Saints?  Why do we dare to honor them and ask them to pray for us?

Here’s a peek at what I say about the Saints in How to Become a Heroic Catholic:

….We look to the Saints for assistance and guidance since they are already in heaven. They are closer to God than we are, and they can pray and intercede for us if we ask of them. I ask people to pray for me and I think that it’s pretty common among people of all faiths to ask that a fellow believer prays for them. Look at what St. Paul says in 1st Timothy:

First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all men, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life, godly and respectful in every way. This is good, and it is acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all, the testimony to which was given at the proper time.

 (1 Timothy 2: 1-6)

He opens up that letter asking for prayers to be offered for everyone. He is telling us to pray for each other. So why then does it become an issue when I ask someone in heaven to pray for me? If we’re in heaven with Christ, can’t we still pray for people?

St. Dominic said, as he was dying in the year 1218 A.D., “Do not weep, for I shall be more useful to you after my death and I shall help you then more effectively than during my life.”

He told his brothers that after he died on earth he would be able to help them more from heaven. If the Saints can’t help us, why would he say that?

St. Therese of Lisieux said something similar around the year 1825 A. D., “I want to spend my heaven in doing good on earth.”

The Saints want to help us here on earth. We can ask them to pray for us, just like I’d ask you to pray for me. They are our brothers and sisters in heaven and they want to lead us to eternal life with Christ. I pray to them, or ask them, to give me guidance, and to help me be like them. They help us find our own paths to holiness.

Why do we honor the Saints?

Do we honor them more than Christ? No.  We honor the saints, we greatly honor Mary as Queen of Heaven, but worship is something given to God alone. [Fun fact: Something neat I learned about not too long ago is the contrasting terms of Dulia vs. Latria. Dulia is honor. Honor is what we give to the Saints in their glory. Hyperdulia is highest honor, which we show to Mary, the mother of God. Latria, on the other hand, is worship. Latria is given to God alone.]

The Saints are role models for everyone, and come from all walks of life. We pray for them to intercede on our behalf, or on a friend’s behalf, to God. They are our friends. We do not worship them. We show them honor because they are beautiful examples of holiness and because they are already in heaven with Christ.

Even when the Church was still very new, she was teaching that we can ask the Saints to pray for us.

St. Augustine once said:

“It is true that Christians pay religious honor to the memory of the martyrs, both to excite us to imitate them, and to obtain a share in their merits and the assistance of their prayers.” [Reply to Faustus the Manichean 20:21 {c. A.D. 400)]

Change in the release date.

Yeah…I kinda have to change the release date.

I know, I said the 21st, but God decided that TODAY would be better!

That’s right! TODAY.

You can go buy it on Amazon!

And it couldn’t have happened on a better day.

You see, today is St. Ignatius of Antioch’s feast day.

He’s one of my favorite apologists and Saints. He learned at the feet of the Apostle John, and was the first to use the term “Catholic” to describe our faith.

He’s awesome.

And so is the book. 😉

So go check it out! All praise and glory goes to God!

Sneak Peek #1

Guess what! 11 days till release! 😀 Lots of good things happening!  My editor is about 1/4 way through the proof copy as of today, not many changes to make! Working on hardcover covers (formatting those is fun.), editing, and planning more blog posts today.

But all the boring update stuff aside, it’s sneak peek time!

Here’s the first part of Chapter 1!

Catholics by Conviction

“The age of casual Catholicism is over; the age of

Heroic Catholicism has begun.

We can no longer be Catholics by accident but instead we must be

Catholics by conviction.”

-Fr. Terrence Henry, TOR,

Franciscan University of Steubenville

Fr. Terrence Henry is right. There’s no time to be casual in our Catholicism. We must be heroic in our faith! We (Catholics) need to be filled with our faith, fully immersed in it, ready to show the world what it truly means to be Catholic in today’s society.  In order to do that we must be confident in what we believe. We must know all of the who, what, where, when, why, and how of our beliefs. These facts will be questioned and they will be twisted…which is why we must know the Truth.

We can’t be Catholic only when it is convenient. We can’t be Catholic only when the world says it’s okay.  We have to be Catholic because it is who we are. I don’t know about you, but my faith is my life.  My schedule every week is configured around Mass on Sunday. I spend time studying our faith; you’d be likely to catch me reading in my room from either St. Thomas’s Summa Theologica, or the Catechism or one of the many apologetics books that my mom has.  I realize that this not typical though. It’s countercultural. People aren’t likely to support it. This is the reason why we have to be that much more solid in our beliefs; so we can keep our beliefs throughout our life and not be led astray by what seems “cool” or “popular,” but rather stay rooted in our faith.

God calls each of us to be His ambassador and to spread His word. We are all charged with the command of spreading the Gospel and teaching those who know not Truth. This means we have to actually talk about our faith. It’s easy to sit back and not let faith be a big part of your life. It’s easy to leave it to other people. But that’s not what we’re called to do. We’re called to learn about our faith so we may teach others.

I’m always surprised, and not in a good way, by the lack of people who really know what their Faith is about.  Too many are simply Catholic because their families are. No. We must be Catholic because it is Truth.  To know Truth we have to first know the basics of defending it ourselves.  To do that we have to learn about not only what we believe, but why we believe it.

We have to be heroic Catholics. Why do I say that? Because look at the heroes in the world. From the Knights who went on the Crusades, to the Apostles who risked everything to spread Catholicism, to even people like the pilot who landed the plane in the Hudson River a few years ago.

What do all those people have in common? They are heroes.

End sneak peek. 😉

What do you think?

If you like what you read, can you do me a favor?

Share this website with your friends! It’s easy, and I’d be extremely grateful.

Or, do you have a blog/website of your own? And are you interested in reading How To Become a Heroic Catholic before the release date? Tell me! One way that works very well to build up a good following for a book is to have reviews written and spread out on the internet before the release date. That’s what I’m looking for.

So if you’re interested in reading it and writing a review for me, posting it on your blog/website and possibly my Facebook page…comment here or send me a message on Facebook. I’ll be happy to talk to you about it.

Keep up the prayers! I’m praying for y’all too.

In Christ,

Catherine

Guess what came in today!

The Proof Copies are in! 😀 LOOK!

photo (28)

Now it’s time for a tough review…going through it page by page, word by word, making sure it’s as close to perfect as can be! It’s exciting 😀 To be holding a physical copy of my book is surreal. I can’t explain how amazing it feels to be able to hold this in my hand and realize that this is really happening. Praise God. That’s all I can say. He is awesome.

Last post, I also said that “How to Become a Heroic Catholic” wasn’t the original title. What was?

To be honest, I didn’t have a title for it for a while. Then it was “In Defense of Catholicism” and “How to Defend your Faith” and a couple others. Titles are tricky! But I think I decided on the *perfect* one, don’t you?

Check back on Friday for a sneak peek of the first chapter!

Keep up the prayers, God has big things in store and it’s gonna be great.

Thanks!

Catherine

Why “How to Become a Heroic Catholic”?

So I started a facebook page yesterday (https://www.facebook.com/HowToBecomeAHeroicCatholic/ )

And in celebration of reaching 50 likes I shared the inspiration for the title. Here you go!

“The age of casual Catholicism is over; the age of Heroic Catholicism has begun. We can no longer be Catholics by accident but instead we must be Catholics by conviction.”
-Fr. Terrence Henry

No longer Catholics by accident, no longer Catholics by convenience. But Catholics by conviction – Catholics ready to be heroic in their Faith, by defending it, by spreading it, by living it. Heroic Catholics.

And that’s where I got the title from. It wasn’t the original title for the book though. What was? Check back on Wednesday to find out. 😉
